Star Wars what is Canon and what is Legends ? What does it mean ?

On April 25 2014, Disney announced a new re-order of the old Expanded Universe into a label called Legends and the official story into a label called Canon.

“While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.”

What George Lucas made which is the six movies and Star Wars The Clone Wars (the 2008 series + movie + Darth Maul Son of Dathomir + Dark Disciple + Utapau Story Reel) are the immovable objects of Star Wars History, they are the basis of Star Wars.

All the upcoming material released in the future will be canon and it started with the comics Star Wars Darth Maul Son of Dathomir released by Dark Horse ( now the license for the comics will be released under the Marvel banner), on the novel side it started with Star Wars A New Dawn, on the TV side it started with Star Wars Rebels and on the cinema side it will start with Star Wars Episode VII Christmas 2015.

So everything which was part of the Old Expanded Universe is now Legends which includes all the video games (ex: Star Wars The Force Unleashed I and II), all the previous comics, all the previous novels, all the previous tv material (clone wars micro series of 2003, ewoks: the battle of endor … )
